Chris Brown has received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023. The American singer, 37, pleaded guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court in July 2026 and was sentenced on 26 October.

The case centred on an incident at Tape, a private members’ club in Mayfair, where Brown was accused of striking Diaw with a tequila bottle during a confrontation on the dance floor.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as dangerous, highlighting the use of a bottle against Diaw’s head. The court considered the seriousness of the assault alongside Brown’s guilty plea, personal circumstances and previous convictions when determining his sentence.

CCTV footage presented in court showed Brown striking Diaw four times with the bottle. Two blows connected with his head, while another struck his shoulder. The footage formed part of the evidence examined during the proceedings.

The incident occurred at around 3am and lasted approximately 20 seconds. Diaw sustained head and knee injuries and received hospital treatment.

Brown’s vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby, was involved in the attack. Prosecutors told the court that Akinlolu punched Diaw and kicked him while he was on the floor. Akinlolu received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Brown and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray on 24 July 2026. The pleas brought an end to proceedings over the incident without a trial on the more serious charges. Those charges included attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon in Brown’s case. The prosecution dropped the relevant charges following the guilty pleas.

Brown’s lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, presented mitigating factors during sentencing, including his guilty plea, employment and charitable work. The defence also referred to his circumstances in support of a suspended sentence.

The singer had faced the possibility of a prison term of up to three years before the case was resolved through the guilty plea. Instead, the court imposed an eight-month sentence that will remain suspended for 12 months, subject to the applicable legal conditions.

The case had been under investigation for more than two years before Brown was arrested at a hotel in Manchester on 15 May 2025. He was in the UK ahead of scheduled tour performances when officers detained him in connection with the nightclub incident.

Brown was subsequently released on £5 million bail, allowing him to continue his professional commitments while the case proceeded. His arrest drew renewed attention to the investigation, which had remained unresolved since the February 2023 incident.

The London case is separate from Brown’s 2009 conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. He received probation and was ordered to complete community labour in that case. The conviction has remained a significant part of his public record, but the proceedings involving Diaw concerned a separate incident and resulted in a distinct conviction for affray.

Under the terms of the latest sentence, Brown will not serve the eight months in prison immediately. However, the suspended sentence means he could face imprisonment if the relevant conditions are breached during the 12-month period.

The ruling concludes the sentencing stage of the London nightclub case. Brown has admitted his role in the incident through his guilty plea and has received a suspended prison sentence rather than immediate custody.
