Taylor Swift Breaks Record for Most MTV VMA Wins

Taylor Swift has moved ahead of Beyoncé to become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history, following a successful night at the 2026 ceremony in Los Angeles on 27 September.

Swift entered the awards tied with Beyoncé on 30 wins. Her victories for Video of the Year with “The Fate of Ophelia” and the newly introduced Artist Director Honors award took her reported total to 32, placing her at the top of the VMAs’ all-time winners list.

The Artist Director Honors award recognises artists’ contributions to music video direction. For Swift, the recognition reflects her involvement in the creative work behind her videos, including writing and directing projects alongside her recording career.

During her acceptance speech, Swift discussed her experience making music videos, referring to her work across dozens of productions. She has increasingly taken an active role in shaping the visual presentation of her music, working with directors, choreographers, cinematographers and editors to bring her ideas to the screen.

Her Video of the Year win for “The Fate of Ophelia” was another significant achievement at the ceremony. Swift thanked the team responsible for the production, acknowledging the contributions of the people who worked behind the camera.

She also dedicated the award to Dolly Parton, praising the country music legend’s songwriting and storytelling. The tribute recognised Parton’s influence on generations of musicians and songwriters.

Swift’s history with the VMAs stretches back to 2009, when “You Belong with Me” won Best Female Video. She later collected nine awards at the 2023 ceremony, including Video of the Year for “Anti-Hero”. In 2024, she won seven awards from 12 nominations, with several victories linked to “Fortnight”, her collaboration with Post Malone.

Those achievements helped establish Swift’s position among the ceremony’s most successful artists before her latest wins placed her ahead of Beyoncé. Beyoncé’s own VMA record includes awards earned through her solo career and group projects.

The latest milestone also highlights the role music videos have played throughout Swift’s career. Beyond promoting singles, her videos have provided another way to develop the stories and ideas behind her music, with direction and production forming an increasingly visible part of her work.
